Pasykaf supports patients with stoma

Cancer charity Pasykaf said it fully supports people that live with using a stoma and have dedicated a section of their website for information about this surgical intervention.

A stoma is the surgical creation of an artificial passage from an organ to the external environment through an ostomy bag, Pasykaf explained as they list the different types of stomas.

Some of the reasons why people may need a stoma include bowel and bladder cancer, but also inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis), diverticulitis or an obstruction to the bladder or bowel.

Most stomas are created to drain the body’s secretions through the abdominal wall. They can either be temporary or permanent depending on the cause.

With the aim to help people with stoma have “a better quality of life”, the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (Pasykaf) has published useful information for the patients, including how to properly care for the skin around the stoma.

The information is available both in Greek and in English.
